ZOMBIE WALK FOR TOBACCO PREVENTION
East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania- On Wednesday, April 16th at 4:00 p.m. at East Stroudsburg High School South the Tobacco Free teen group, an initiative of Youth Infusion, Inc. and Tobacco Free Northeast, will hold a Zombie Walk to bring awareness to the problem of tobacco use in their community. Each zombie will represent someone who has died from a tobacco related disease. The students would like their message to be heard that six million people die every year because of tobacco. This number includes five million smokers, but also about 600,000 non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.
The Zombie Walk is being held for Kick Butts Day, which is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. Kick Butts Day 2014 was held on March 19. Since that date there have been over 1,400 events across the United States and military bases around the world. Thousands of youth are speaking out again the harms of tobacco use.
In addition to East Stroudsburg High School South students, 4th graders from Stroudsburg Intermediate Elementary school, as well as, ESU students will be participating in the event. Samantha Zrillo, ESU student and Zombie Walk participant states, “I breathe in second hand smoke on a daily basis and I am excited to raise awareness about the harmful effects it has on people. People making the healthy decision not to smoke should not have to suffer the consequences.”
The Zombie Walk will begin at the main entrance of East Stroudsburg High School South at 4:00 p.m. Students will walk down North Courtland Street, continue down Crystal Street, then loop back around to the high school. Community members are welcome to attend.
Students would like to thank Frazetta’s Costume for their generous donations of materials to support the Zombie Walk.

East Stroudsburg, PA – Through its School-based Service-learning Initiative, Youth Infusion, Inc. partnerswith East Stroudsburg High School South to assist their students in doing service-learning projects as part of the curriculum. This semester, as part of their English Class, high school students have been researching the effects of Title IX legislation. In particular, the students have focused on the following sub-topics:

- History/Effects of Title IX legislation
- Controversies in Women’s Athletics
- Social/Economic/Psychological Benefits of the Involvement in Athletics for Women
- Impact of Athletics in Early Childhood Development
- Stories/Testimonials of Female Athletes

East Stroudsburg High School South student Joey Ro says, “I am now aware that female athletes still don’t have equal opportunities. I hope that our demonstration will inspire more kids to take action.” Youth Infusion has worked with Joey and his classmates, throughout the semester, assisting the students by connecting them with community partners and resources. For example, Youth Infusion staff arranged for an interview with International Triathlete and 2-time Ironman Champion Dede Griesbauer. The students’ service-learning project will culminate with a community event called Play like a Girl: 40 Years of Title IX! The event will take place on Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 from 6-9pm at the ESU Center for Research and Development (Route 447 and East Brown Street in East Stroudsburg). Students will present their research and findings through a student-produced documentary film followed by roundtable breakout discussions on next steps with regard to equality for women in sports.
